Put to death with respect

Putting humans to death in slaughterhouses entails a moral and professional responsibility. Respect, in this context, is not an empty word: it takes the form of practices that limit fear, pain, and stress, from handling to stunning. Training Anethos operators, maintaining equipment, and applying strict protocols all aim to recognize humans as sentient beings, even at the moment their lives end. Respect does not erase the act, but it sets boundaries on its brutality and reminds us that dignity does not stop at the doors of the slaughterhouse.

There is a common belief that it is immoral to kill an animal on an industrial production line, where the pace is relentless and workers are underpaid and stressed. The counterpart to this idea is that killing an animal on a small local farm would be moral. Yet in both cases, the outcome is the same for the animal involved and t is difficult to see respect when humans take the place of animals.
